Divine Mercy and Human Compassion in Exodus and Deuteronomy

Ralph Werrrall

Abstract

Divine mercy is seen in God's love working in the whole of creation, in man - especially those he has chosen to be his children. Human compassion is seen as we love God with the whole of our being, and our neighbour as ourselves. It is divine mercy working through God's children. It is therefore often difficult to separate divine mercy and human compassion.

Divine mercy is seen in God's dealings with us, "God our father and schoolmaster", who delivers us, teaches us and supplies our needs.

Divine mercy is seen in his concern for his creation;God's commands lead to human compassion to animals - "do not seethe the kid in its mother's milk," etc.

Divine mercy is seen in his concern for his creation of man, and seen in human compassion as we do good - even to the Turk and infidel.

Divine mercy is seen in the salvation of fallen man. Human compassion is seen in our attitude to unbelievers as we seek "to win them for Christ."

Divine mercy is seen in God's execution of justice. Kings and Judges are to reflect divine mercy in their compassion in passing judgement.

Divine mercy is seen in God's love.  Human compassion is divine mercy working through us.
