Abstract

The apogee of English Protestant revisions of the traditional historiography of the reign of King John, lionizing the once vilified monarch, was reached with the account of John in John Foxe's Acts and Monuments. This article will attempt to demonstrate the exact sources on which this account was based and the accuracy with which they were presented in it. This article will also argue that the account of John was not written by Foxe, but by Foxe's mentor John Bale.
